Training Camp. Day 10. Workout 17.
We swam very well given the challenges - and had fun going after pool records throughout the meet. Starting things off, our men's and women's medley relays each missed the pool record by less than a second. Then Elle Sergi took off on her first 200 free of the season and was on pace to beat the pool record until the final 10 yards when she missed it by about half a second. In a very cool twist, the pool record holder in that particular event was sitting in the stands cheering her on! Nicole Sparks, Catherine's big sister, currently has the record and was clearly hoping that a Bates swimmer would be the one to replace her.
From there we had many good swims... Anne Schwarzwalder went all in-season bests... Andrew Buehler surprised most with his wins in the 100 free and 100 fly (on his way to a add up 400 IM as he swam every 100 yard event yesterday!). Venka Duvvuri gave the 50 fly record a real run and missed out by .06! It was special record in that Bates' interim Head Coach in 2006-07, and Middlebury grad, Mike McCullum, currently holds the record. A cool tie to Bates! 23.9 is a great time for Venka.
Long story short, we had a lot a great swims, but couldn't break through and put a name on their board. Matt Gagne had the answer though in the last individual event of the day... the 100 IM. After watching Catherine Sparks win her 2nd event of the day looking strong, he jumped in and squeezed under the record by .02 with a time of 55.64. His fly was crisp, his backstroke had a quick tempo... there was a great back to breast flip turn in there (could have been the difference for sure!), and then the freestyle leg looked so strong - sans the last (not at all necessary) breath.
Off to race Midd... should be a ton of great races... (hoping to post the 100 IM record later)
