Bobcat of the Week!
Bobcat of the Week of Feb. 27, 2012: Dan Aupi ’12
The Bates College men’s swimming and diving team finished in sixth place at the conclusion of the 2012 NESCAC Championships on Sunday, tying for the team’s best finish in the meet’s 12-year history with the 2001, 2002 and 2003 squads. Perhaps no one’s contributions to the team’s outstanding performance outshone those of senior Dan Aupi (Branford, Conn.).
Aupi set a new Bates standard in the 50-yard backstroke on Friday, when he recorded the third fastest prelim time in the field, at 24.13 seconds. The former team record of 24.14 was set by Chris Berry ’09 in 2009. Also on Friday, swimming the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay, Aupi broke another of Berry’s former records, the 100-yard backstroke, by one hundredth of a second, with his split of 52.28 seconds.
Aupi needed to break his own Bates record in the 100 freestyle just to make the A Final in the event on Sunday, which he did, finishing his preliminary heat in 46.87 seconds. He finished eighth in the A Final in 47.29 seconds. Aupi’s own former team record of 47.30 was set two years ago at NESCACs.
Aupi was also in both of Bates’ team record-breaking relay races — the 200 free relay on Friday (1:24.21) and the 400 free relay (3:06.06) on Sunday. His name now appears 10 times in Bates’ record book, more than anyone else’s.
