Bobcat of the Week!
Bobcat of the Week of Feb. 20, 2012: Kara Leasure ’12
Leasure became Bates’ first swimming event winner since 2005, and broke her own team record in the process, in the 200-yard breaststroke, to claim her second career All-NESCAC honors in the event. She beat her own former team record of 2:22.25 in the 200 breast with a time of 2:21.11, her third national ‘B’ cut time of the meet.Senior captain Kara Leasure certainly made the most of her final NESCAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship last weekend, helping the Bobcats finish fifth in the conference for the second straight year
Leasure made a huge impact on the Bobcats’ fortunes in all three days of the meet. On Saturday she finished seventh in the 400 individual medley in 4:35.58, another NCAA ‘B’ cut time, and later swam a leg of the team record-breaking 800 freestyle relay, along with sophomore Emilie Geissinger (Bismarck, N.D.), first-year Kristen Barry (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Gabrielle Sergi (Newburyport, Mass.).
On Friday, Leasure broke the team record in the 500 freestyle, after Barry had broken Leasure’s own former record in the event in the morning session. Leasure placed 10th in the event overall in 5:04.09, her first B cut of the weekend. Later Friday night, Leasure helped break the team record in the 400 medley relay, along with sophomore Emily Depew (Hudson, Ohio), first-year Allie Skaperdas (New Canaan, Conn.) and and Geissinger.
Leasure is the team’s first event winner at NESCACs since Kelsey Lamdin ’09 swept the diving crowns in 2009, and the first swimmer to win an event since Vanessa Williamson ’05 in 2005.
