W-NESCAC (Recap)

Sustained Excellence

I really can't explain what an amazing weekend Bates Women's Swimming and Diving just experienced. Fans, parents, alumni, and the team should be so proud of these ladies. Moments like this are what we want to build our program around, and come to expect, but you can never miss out on the opportunity to celebrate what was hands down one of the most memorable weekends of my life.

I'll do a quick recap, but it doesn't even begin to touch upon all the moments that brought wide eyed smiles and tears of joy. Every member of this team contributed to this experience, and every single member of the team is responsible for this success. Yes, this is an individual sport most of the time, but this weekend the Bates Bobcats were truly the best team at the meet. Every coach on deck stopped congratulating their own team members to walk over to our ladies and congratulate us. That just doesn't happen - especially when you swim in the best swimming conference in the country. I'm still in awe of these ladies.

Our top performers this weekend inspired others - and were inspired by their teammates - and yes... they need even more recognition!

Charlotte Green '11 - Seeded 18th in the 50 free, she ends up 6th with a school record and over a second drop (24.55, she also split 24.05 for the fastest 200 Medley freestyle leg at the meet!). In the 200 free she was seeded 26th and came in 12th with over a 3 second drop going 1:58.4. And wrapped up the weekend dropping from 16th to 5th in the 100 free with a new school record, a National B-Cut, and a 1.9 second drop (53.06)!

• Katelyn Drake '10 - She swam the 100 back 4 times this weekend (relays and individually) and finished with the 4 fastest times of her career (59.1, 59.04, 58.94, and 58.89). Those all over a second off her lifetime best and all are national cuts! She actually started the weekend with a 27.7 50 back (1.2 second drop) and took a second off the school record. Katelyn finished the weekend with 2 lifetime bests - nearly a 2 second drop off her LTB - broke the school record twice - and was way under the 200 back national cut (2:07.9).

• The foursome of Annie Barton '08 (Captain), Emilie Swenson '08 (Captain), Katelyn Drake, and Charlotte Green accomplished one of the rarest feats in collegiate swimming by smashing ALL THREE freestyle school relay records. Having the 4 same girls, in just 3 days, finish up as the fastest in school history in all their relays is nearly impossible to even comprehend. They started off the weekend seeded with the 9th fastest 200 freestyle relay time, improved to 4th overall, and dropped the 1996 record from a 1:41.6 to a 1:38.8! Next they jumped in together for the grueling 800 freestyle record - an event we haven't even swam this year - and lowered the school record by .7 going 7:54.05! Finally they saved the best for last going from 9th to 4th again, breaking the school record by over 2 seconds, and popping a 3:36.00 in the 400 free relay! (I actually remember Emilie telling the girls on the bus ride after prelims that if everyone went 54.0 that would be a 3:36!)

• Finally, Kelsey Lamdin '09 continued her dominance on both 1 meter and 3 meter finishing up 2nd and 3rd respectively. She had 4 national level performances and 2 School Records!!! (remember, she was abroad first semester, so she is still getting better!!!)

Overall we brought 18 girls to this meet (well under the limit of 24). They broke 10 School Records, had 9 National Consideration Performances, and went over 70 Lifetime Bests. That is incredible.

(ps - if you go to d3cast.com you can watch the finals of each night if you go to "archives")
