Wesleyan Dual

Starting off the season on the road, at a phenomenal pool, is always a fun way to begin the dual meet season. You could tell the team was excited to compete, and many of them came prepared to take advantage of the opportunity. Charlotte Green, our freshman sprinter, definitely was on the blocks with a clear vision of what she wanted to accomplish. In fact, two days earlier she was in my office nervously discussing what she thought her times could be - and she was right on them! Looking back, it is clear to see she believed in those times, and knew how to make them a reality. Popping a 25.8 in the 50 and then charging home in the 100 free at 56.2, just 15 minutes later, was impressive (btw, you were out too slow Charlotte). Other strong performances included Katelyn Drake showing why she is one of the conference's best backstrokers with two smart early-season swims (102.4, 2:14.5). And captain, Emilie Swenson, threw down some impressive times in the 200 free (2:03.5), and the 100 fly (1:02.1). From top to bottom the women impressed me, unfortunately every close race went to Wesleyan - but we have time to work on that.

The men's team is going to have to scratch and claw for every point this year as we just don't have the numbers, and options, other teams have. However, their desire to improve coupled with their talent for working hard, will yeild some great performances - and possibly a relay or two that turn some heads. A couple of stand-out performances include Chris Berry looking strong (not necessarily fast yet) in his backstroke events, and freshman Peem Chatikanvanij leading our sprinters on both relays and in the 50 Free. Nate Cooper was most impressive jumping in and going his best in-season time in the 50, and putting together a 100 freestyle that was absolutely textbook (25.0 - 26.6).

All in all things went smooth and I learned a good deal about each swimmer. I am looking forward to learning more as the season continues - and seeing who brings it to each meet.
